Shakespeare & Eminescu – Measure for Measure

Shakespeare & Eminescu – Measure for Measure

Eminescu – widely celebrated by Romanians worldwide – may well be the most unknown great national poet to the English-speaking world.Without a doubt, Shakespeare is the most universally celebrated national poet. Eminescu, widely celebrated in Romania and by Romanians the world over, may well be the most unknown great national poet to the English speaking world. While excellent and varied renditions of the Bard’s plays in Romanian abound, Eminescu translations into English are not only scarce, but, to a large extent, unconvincing. Language competency plays its part, since Romanian translators have traditionally been scholars with a thorough understanding of the English language, literature and Shakespeare. Conversely, one can hardly find a native English translator with more than a superficial understanding of ‘folkloric’ Romanian. More

System-Of-Systems to the Rescue? Solving Unsolvable Problems

System-Of-Systems to the Rescue? Solving Unsolvable Problems

The term system-of-systems is increasingly used to describe systems operating under conditions of ambiguity, complexity, emergence, interdependence, and uncertainty. Although there is a good understanding of the kinds of systems that could be considered as systems-of-systems, a consensus on an exact definition of the term has yet to emerge --- bringing into question the nature of solutions to the problem space of system-of-systems. Terms, including large-scale systems, socio-technical systems, and cyber-physical systems are often used. The Business of Culture – Whose Enterprise?

The Business of Culture – Whose Enterprise?

Each 15 January and 15 June I think of why Eminescu is not more visibly and publicly appreciated by we Romanians, and, therefore, better known internationally? If you think this is not a well-constructed question, please let me tell you that it is. I will do so in the next paragraphs. And the comparisons with Shakespeare come naturally to my mind, against my better judgement, and the many examples I have myself to answer my above question. More

Simion Mehedinți – a Man of Fulfilled Ideas

Simion Mehedinți – a Man of Fulfilled Ideas

“Idea is architectonic; it creates science.” This is the adopted motto of the great scholar Simion Mehedinți (SM) in his fundamental book “Terra. Introducere în geografie ca știință” (Terra. Introduction to geography as a science), published in 1930. The sententious statement, but full of meaning, belongs to the remarkable German philosopher Immanuel Kant, whom he admired intensely given his encounter with the philosopher’s work when Mehedinți studied in Germany. Classical Liberalism in Romania: The Case of Emanuel Neuman

Classical Liberalism in Romania: The Case of Emanuel Neuman

One of the things which can probably be safely – and sadly, in our opinion – said about the history of modern Romania is that it experienced neither a coherent and consistent body of classical liberal ideas, nor a genuinely classical liberal political and economic program. That liberalism acquired, in the Romanian context (and more generally in the Eastern European and Russian context), the distorted meaning of “progressivism” by the top-down hand of the state if necessary is often acknowledged (a necessity espoused by nearly everyone and at nearly all times).
